When you’re getting to know someone for the first time, like a new pupil at your school, you ask their name, what they like to do, and whether they are kind. Getting to know who God is is like that. The only difference is that God is not like the pupils in your school that you can see with your eyes; God is a spirit. Since God is a spirit, we can only see him and be his friend through our hearts and minds, not through our eyes. You can think of God like a wind; you can’t see it, but you can feel it. You can also see the leaves moving back and forth as the wind blows through the tree. We may not see God, but we can see him in all the great and amazing things he does.
Here is the “Big picture” of who God is for Children
He is a Great Designer
Imagine you find a beautiful wristwatch on your classroom table; you will know it didn’t belong there. A smart, intelligent person produced the wristwatch. God is the biggest designer ever! Everything we see with our eyes, like the stars, the moon, the mountains, and the sky, was all designed by God.
Details: God is the super-smart Designer. He decided exactly how many spots a ladybug should have, and exactly how far away the sun should be from the earth, so we don’t get too hot or too cold. God made us in His image, and so we are beautiful.
Bible verse: “Through him all things were made. Without him, nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:3 (ICB)

He is Holy and Good
Holiness means that God is different from everyone else, that he does not make mistakes, and that he is perfectly pure. He is the King of Kings, and everyone submits to him for wisdom and understanding.
Details: Have you ever seen identical twins before? They look like each other. But God is one of a kind; He has no equal, He is all by Himself, and is Pure. When we call Him Holy, we are saying that He is extraordinarily special.
Bible verse: “There is no one holy like the Lord. There is no one but you. There is no Rock like our God.” – 1 Samuel 2:2 (ICB)

He is Love and Should be Feared
God is to be feared, but that does not mean we should be scared or afraid of him. This means he demands respect and obedience from his children. By showing full obedience, he shows love and blesses us.
Details: Imagine having friends you share how your day goes with, you can’t wait to tell them how your day went. God can be like your friends. You can tell Him anything, from what happens when you wake up in the morning to how the whole day went. You can talk to Him anytime, even while you’re on the school bus.
Bible verse: “The Lord is good in everything he does. He is loving in all he makes… He does what those who fear him want. He hears their cries and saves them.”- Psalm 145:17-19 (ICB)

He is “Everywhere” at Once
If you are in school and your mummy is at home, you cannot hold hands, because you are not in the same place. But with God, it is different.
Detail: Because God is a Spirit, He isn’t confined to one body or place. He can be right next to you while you’re brushing your teeth, and at the exact same second, He is with a little kid on the other side of the world. He’s like the air—everywhere you go, He is always there waiting for you.
Bible verse: “‘No one can hide in a secret place so that I cannot see him,’ says the Lord. ‘I fill all of heaven and earth,’ says the Lord.”- Jeremiah 23:24 (ICB)

He is a Father Who Listens
Imagine you have a super-secret walkie-talkie that never runs out of batteries and always has a perfect signal. That is a little bit like what it’s like when you talk to God. Even when we can’t see God, He is a Master Listener.
Details: Imagine having friends you share how your day goes with, you can’t wait to tell them how your day went. God can be like your friends. You can tell Him anything, from what happens when you wake up in the morning to how the whole day went. You can talk to Him anytime, even while you’re on the school bus.
Bible Verse: “The Lord is near to all who call on him.” — Psalm 145:18

He is the “Always-Been” King
Do you know that everything and everyone was created by God? God is the only one who was never created.
Details: Before there was time, clocks, or even the sun, God was already there. He doesn’t have a birthday because He never had a beginning, and He will never have an end. He is like a circle, He just keeps going.
Bible verse: “Before the mountains were born and before you created the earth and the world, you were God. You have always been God, and you will be God forever.”- Psalm 90:2 (ICB)

He is Perfect
Have you ever tried to draw a perfect circle and wobbled a little bit? Or tried to be good all day but accidentally got grumpy?
Details: The bigger boys in your school have been bullying you, even after reporting the bullying to your parents; the trouble at school continues. You’ve tried so many ways to make it stop, but you haven’t brought the problem to God yet. God, being perfect, wants to be your Helper. Asking God for help, you aren’t just looking for a way to stop the bullying; you’re also learning how to be ‘perfect’, acting with the same wisdom, patience, and strength that God shows every day.”
Bible verse: “The ways of God are perfect. The Lord’s promise is pure. He is a shield for those who trust him.”- Psalm 18:30 (ICB)
