Recognizing Those Who Keep Us Afloat

April 14, 2026

Recognizing those that keep us afloat is the secret to building an organization that can survive any storm. In the lifecycle of any business or community project, there are moments of calm and moments of crisis. While many people contribute to the daily routine, there is always a select group of individuals who step up when the water gets rough, acting as the anchor that prevents the entire ship from drifting away.

Here is how different people show up when it matters most:

The Employee: Imagine a sales representative at a small agency during a month where no new leads were coming in, and morale was at an all-time low. Instead of giving up, they spent their evenings cold-calling fifty old leads and managed to sign a huge, multi-year contract that kept the company financially stable for two years.  Giving them this tag tells them, “Your determination is the reason we are still in business today.

The Volunteer: a community library that suddenly lost its government funding and was only weeks away from locking its doors for good. A dedicated volunteer stepped in and organized a “Save Our Library” marathon drive, pulling in enough private donations and local corporate sponsorships to keep the doors open for another full year.  This tag recognizes that their unpaid passion is the lifeblood of the mission.

The Customer: Picture a luxury shop that wouldn’t meet its sales target unless it sold five bags. A longtime customer heard about the promotion and worked in and bagged six leather bags instead of five. The manager was excited about this and decided to give the customer a special gift with a “Keep Afloat Appreciation Tag” attached.

The Boss: think of a manager who rolls up their sleeves and takes on the manual labour of two vacant roles to protect their team from burnout during a peak period. The “Keep Alfoat”  tag is an incredible way for a team to say, “We see the sacrifices you are making to support the team.

Why the Tag Matters

Recognition shouldn’t just happen during annual reviews. The best time to thank someone for keeping you afloat is right after the waves have settled. Whether it’s a massive contract win, a technical rescue, or a financial lifeline, these people deserve to know that their extra effort was the difference between sinking and sailing. Use this tag to make sure your “anchors” know exactly how much they are valued
