Before the creation of the world, we learned that the earth had no form and that darkness covered its surface; so when God created the world, the first thing He did was create light. In the book of Genesis 1:3, we see God made a statement, “Let there be light”. This was the first time God introduced light into the world. In verse 4 of Genesis 1, God saw that the light was good, and so God separated light from darkness. The Genesis of light and darkness is like the difference between being safe with Jesus (light) and being lost without Him (darkness).
Reasons why Light is different from Darkness
The book of John 3:19-20 says, “This is how people are judged: The light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness more than the light. They loved darkness because the things they did were evil. Anyone who does evil hates the light. He will not come to the light because it will show all the evil things he has done.” This is a message to us, the children of God, to obey God’s word and be the light through which the world sees and know God. Let us look at what makes light different from darkness.
Light (Daytime) is God’s Goodness
Honest and Safe:
Light represents God’s love, truth and kindness. We can’t hide anything when we are in the light. Doing good things and being obedient, like sharing our things with others and telling the truth, can only be done in the light.

The light guides us
Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.” When we walk into a bright place, we feel safe because we can see everything clearly. We can also see where we are going.

Jesus is the light
The book of John 8:12 says, “I am the light of the world” He is also the word of God. This means following Jesus is like walking in the sunshine while His word is in our heart makes everything good. Psalms 119:11 states “I have taken your words to heart so I would not sin against you.” When we decide to be in the light, Jesus becomes our touch-light as His direct our thoughts and actions.

It brings Life
The bible described “Fruit” as the result of living in the light. This is a moral difference in how someone in the light behaves toward others compared to how someone in the dark behaves. The fruits of the Spirit are the characteristics that a person who is in the light begins to grow into, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, according to Galatians 5:22-23. On the other hand, others who are not living in the light have fear, anxiety, prolonged sadness and others.

Final Victory
The Bible describes the beginning and end of the world using these two examples. In the end, the physical darkness and spiritual darkness will be removed, as Revelation 22:5 says, “There will never be night again. They will not need the light of a lamp or the sun. The Lord God will shine on them, and they will rule as kings forever and ever” This means, light will win the darkness when the world ends.

Darkness (Nighttime) is Sin and Fear
Hiding and Scary
Darkness represents sin (doing bad things). Being in a dark place is scary because you can’t see what’s ahead. Anyone can do bad things in the dark, and no one would know about it because everywhere is black. Being in the dark means being without Jesus. Kids who are in darkness become selfish, tell lies, and steal, all of which are sins in God’s sight.

It means being apart from God
Darkness is everything that is not God. 1 John 1:5 says, “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all”. When we are in darkness, it means we are not in God because there is no place for darkness with Him. And so, anyone in darkness is separated from God, and such a person will not be truthful, kind or have anything good in them.

It represents Death
John 8:12 says “… I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness. He will have the light that gives life” If we stay in darkness, it means our spiritual life will remain in death.

It’s for a short period
Just like when our light at home gets interrupted, it’s always for a short time. Isaiah 60:20 says that when the world ends, darkness will disappear and we will never see it again. Being in the dark is always for a short time; when we sin, once we ask God for forgiveness, we are forgiven immediately because God does not like to hold our sin against us. He always wants us to repent and come back to him.
