Why Should We Pray?

March 4, 2026

The Lord’s Prayer (ICB Version)

When children don’t know how to pray, they ask someone who can. The same thing applies to Jesus’ friends (Disciples), who saw him praying to God one day and asked him, “Can you teach us how to pray too?” Jesus gave them the ACTS of prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Let’s look at the Lord’s Prayer and how each sentence teaches us how to pray to God.

The Lord’s Prayer – How to Pray to God?

1. Our Father who Is In Heaven, we pray that your name will always be kept holy.

Jesus’ first sentence is an act of Adoration: telling God He is awesome and wonderful, or giving God a big heart, cheering. It also reminds us that the God we pray to is in heaven. Jesus shows us that we should start by cheering for God! It’s like being His biggest fan and telling Him, ‘God, You are the most amazing King ever

2. We pray that your Kingdom will come, we pray that what you want will be done, here on earth as it is done in heaven

This sentence is also part of Adoration to God. It’s like letting God know that where he lives in heaven is a holy place, and that we want the earth to be like heaven, too. That is, we should try to make the world a better place so that God will be happy with us.

Our Father in heaven

3. Give us the food we need for each day

This sentence is a Supplication (a plea for help), meaning to ask God for help in anything. This is not only about food, but also about everything we need God to help us with. This teaches us to depend on God for everything we may need.

4. Forgive us for our sins, just as we have forgiven those who sinned against us

This sentence is about confession. God did not want us to cover or hide our sin. He wants us to confess our sins to him so that he can forgive us. He also wants to do the same thing to our friends when they hurt us.

Forgive us our sin

5. And do not cause us to be tempted, but save us from the Evil One

This sentence is another Supplication (Plea for help). Jesus wants us to know that there are evil people or forces in the world and that we can be tempted (testing of our hearts) by them. Here, Jesus teaches us to ask God’s help and that He alone can protect us when the evil one comes.

Save us oh Lord

6. The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours forever

This last sentence is part of Adoration to God. What Jesus teaches us here is that after talking to God and asking Him for what we need, we should also let Him know He is awesome and great, and that everything belongs to Him alone.

Your kingdom come Lord
