A Parent’s Prayer
A reminder sets in as the summer gradually ends and the leaves hint at a change. The new school year is here! It is a time of new school supplies and shiny shoes. However, it can also be a season of big emotions and new challenges for our children getting ready for school. As parents, our deepest desire is to protect their peace. While we can’t be with them in the classroom, you can protect your child’s peace before school commences with the shield of God’s faith and a heart of courage.
So, how do we protect our child’s peace before school?
1. Start with Prayer
With hectic mornings, sometimes parent rush out the door without praying for themselves or their children. Taking a moment to pray with your child is one of the most powerful things you can do. Pray for their well-being, friends, teachers, and hearts. Ask God to fill them with a spirit of peace that goes beyond anything they can understand. Remind them that they are never alone.
Philippians 4:7 “And God’s peace will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus. The peace that God gives is so great that we cannot understand it.”

2. Speak Words of Promise
Speak God’s promises over them daily. Remind them they are brave, and deeply loved. The Bible is full of assurances that can act as a shield against fear or anxiety.
One of the most comforting verses for a child is Joshua 1:9 (ICB): “Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave. So don’t be afraid. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go.”
This bible verse is a promise from God that speaks directly to overcoming their fears. Remind them that God is right there with them, no matter their difficult situation. You might even write this verse on a note to tuck into their lunchbox or backpack.

3. Equip Them with Truth, Not Just Supplies
Parents go above and beyond to get their kids shining backpacks with notebooks and pens, but what about their minds and hearts? Help your kids memorize a simple verse. The approach is to equip them to utter the bible verses when they need to do so. They can silently repeat the words when they feel nervous around friends or worried about a test. Holding onto God’s word turns a moment of worry into a moment of strength.
Train them that their identity is not in their grades or popularity but in God’s unconditional love.
1 John 4:18 (ICB) says, “There is no fear in love. God’s perfect love drives out fear.” Their fears will begin to fade when they feel God’s presence and perfect love.

4. Listen with Your Heart
When your child comes home, be ready to listen to them. Put away your phone and ask them about their day, not just their school work, but how they felt. Create a safe space for them to share their concerns, frustrations, and small triumphs. Sometimes, sharing your personal experiences and how you solved them can help your kids overcome their anxiety.
As a parent, your love and presence reflect God’s ways. By showing your children patience, kindness, and unwavering support, you are demonstrating the love that casts out fear.
Our goal isn’t to always expect our children to excellent grades this new school season. It’s a wonderful time to show them how to fill their hearts with of peace, courage, and the knowledge of their Heavenly Father who walks with them everyday. Importantly, lets send them off with a prayer and a promise, knowing that the God who created them will also protect their peace.
